Cut a $195,000 hospital bill to under $40,000 using Claude’s line-item audit

After his brother-in-law died, Matt Rosenberg used Claude to compare the hospital's itemized charges against Medicare billing rules, finding unbundled duplicate charges, wrong inpatient codes and inflated supply prices. Claude helped write the dispute letter, and the hospital cut the bill from $195,000 to roughly $33,000-$37,000 (reports differ).

How to do it

  1. Request a fully itemized bill with standard CPT/HCPCS codes from the hospital.
  2. Remove the patient's name, account numbers and other identifiers before uploading.
  3. Ask the assistant to check each code against Medicare bundling and billing rules and flag duplicates or mismatched codes.
  4. Have it compare supply and service prices to Medicare rates.
  5. Draft a dispute letter listing each flagged item, verify the claims yourself, then send it to billing.

The prompt

I'm attaching an itemized hospital bill with CPT/HCPCS codes (personal info removed). The patient was seen in the emergency department and was never formally admitted. Go line by line and flag: charges that Medicare would bundle into another code, inpatient-only codes, services billed on the same day that shouldn't be billed together, and prices far above Medicare rates. Put the results in a table with the code, charge, issue and the rule involved. Then draft a polite but firm dispute letter to the hospital billing department.
